I was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania -- that's the simple part.
I was raised all over Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia. You
see, my father was in road construction and he wanted his family with
him wherever he was working. As a consequence, I moved 11 times from
the time I was born until I graduated from college (with a peak of 3
times during first grade!).
Even with all the moving around, my parents believed that I needed
a good high school education, so they enrolled me in the
MMI Preparatory
School in Freeland, Pennsylvania. There I was able to obtain a
good college preparatory education.
As a result of the 4 years at MMI, I was able to get in to
Duke University where I majored in
Biomedical Engineering.
With all the options available to me at Duke, I was also able to get
a good grounding in Public Policy from some of the great names in the
field.
My Duke years were full of discovery and adventure, with the two
most enlightening experiences being part of the innaugural class of
Duke's Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and my introduction to a fellow
BME (upperclassman!), Warren Weber.
After graduating from Duke in 1982, Warren and I were married.
Wanting to make sure we were true DINKs, I went to work for the
Department of Defense in Maryland. While my bosses and co-workers
weren't sure what exactly a BME could do, I was able to contribute
to my Agency's mission and learned "the business" in the meantime.
After deciding that the political nature of a government job
did not suit me, I left to find my place in private industry. I
served various stints at BDM, UltraSystems, AGS Genasys, and Unisys
over the next 12 years. (Just for the record, I preceeded
Warren to the jobs at AGS and Unisys -- you might say that I found
the jobs for him!)
I did take some time off for the birth of Amanda (no, I'm NOT
into The Good Earth scene!), but it was good to get back to
work. I am NOT cut out to be a housewife!
Warren and I had threatened to junk the whole Beltway Bandit
scene and move back to North Carolina (or, potentially, Denver or
the Northwest). I found a job that had me contracting
to Carolina Power & Light which eventually
turned into a full-time position, and the rest is history.
We did, briefly, wonder about our decision --
I interviewed while Bertha was passing through Raleigh and we moved
down just in time to experience Fran, but I guess that's part of
life in North Carolina!
In 1999, I left CP&L to take a Systems Administrator position at
First Union that had more technical
challenges and a greater opportunity for advancement (the higher salary had
nothing to do with it -- yeah, right). I am now hard at work on the merger
with Wachovia right now, and I am
enjoying my work life to the fullest.
