Reggae

Reggae just joined our family on August 21st (2006). He is a handsome young Oldenberg x Dutch Warmblood that had turned 4 not long before we bought him. He was entrusted to us by Ali and Ran Shackelford of Hidden Hill Farm of Bahama, NC. We are still in the process of getting pictures of Reggae up here, so until we do, please go the Hidden Hill Farm Web page to see his picture.

We were looking for a large, big boned horse (gotta have that when the rider is 5'11" or better with a 37" inseam!), and were mildly surprised when Reggae measured at 16.1hh at his pre-purchase exam (hh is "hands high" (where a hand equals 4") and height is measured at their withers -- where the neck joins the back). His girth, however, certainly made up for his "lack" of height (for those not horse savy, this is not huge for a horse). Since he is a Warmblood, we know he will continue to grow until he is 5 or 6, so we were not worried. Over the Christmas holidays, we measured him again and discovered he had grown at least 1 1/2 inches to put him around 16.2 1/2hh. Bridget, our barn owner, thinks he will top out at over 17hh. Stay tuned!

Reggae made his show debut on May 5th and 6th, 2007 at the Sedgefield Showgrounds in Greensboro, NC. He did magnificently, negotiating the unknown of flowers and pine boughs in front of jumps.

After many great suggestions, we finally agreed on a show name for Reggae ... Reggae Got Soul! Amanda heard the song with that name (by the band 311) from the Surf's Up movie. The lyrics are cute and so is the song -- go listen! Also, the reference to "Big Z" is interesting as Reggae's dad is Radjah Z.

Thanks to everyone for their great suggestions -- you made the process that much harder!

Please come back soon (and often) to follow Reggae's and Amanda's progress! And check out how they did last year.
